Avonmouth is a former industrial site in Bristol shaped by decades of zinc works activity. Historic contamination, degraded habitats and fragmented watercourses had significantly reduced ecological value and increased flood risk for the surrounding area. The challenge was to remediate the land safely and deliver meaningful biodiversity gains alongside commercial development.

The Challenge
Our Solution
Ecology informed every stage of the design and delivery process. Extensive soil remediation addressed historic contamination and enabled habitats to be reintroduced across the site. Culverted watercourses were reopened and extended, creating a connected network of wetlands and natural drainage.
New habitats and hedgerows were created to improve connectivity and long term resilience, supporting species such as the water vole. The restored land was designed for both ecological and community benefit, with flood risk reduction embedded into the design to protect the surrounding area. Where on site compensation was not possible, biodiversity offsetting was delivered locally in collaboration with statutory bodies.
The result is long term biodiversity recovery that benefits both the natural environment and the communities around it, enabling the completion of six new units in 2025 on a site transformed through ecological restoration.
